Review:
Hook (no relation to the Steven Spielberg movie about Peter Pan… or the Blues Traveler song) is a Puzzle game involving pulling on various pins in the proper order to withdraw them without bumping them into each other.
It’s a simple premise that the game builds on by slowly adding increasingly complex mechanics, though it never feels overly difficult or mind-bending. Still, as puzzle games go, this is a fairly relaxing, straightforward experience.
A part of that is due to the game’s extremely simple visuals and quiet, understated soundtrack. There’s nothing about it that’s particularly impressive, but it does a good job of making for a relaxing mood.
As for complaints, I will say that the controls feel a bit stiff, though this of course is no problem when using the touchscreen. Also, the game is on the short side, being something you can complete in an hour. However, for a game that costs $2, that ain’t bad.
Hook works well as a short, simple puzzle game with a calm, simple presentation. If you want a decent puzzler for $2, you could consider this game a hidden gem on the Switch… as in, it’s actually pretty well-hidden – it doesn’t even come up in a search on Nintendo.com. Don’t worry, the direct link still works. For a few bucks, it’s well worth a try.
tl;dr – Hook is a short, simple, elegant Puzzle game where players pull on lines attached to hooks in an order where they won’t bump into each other. It’s well worth its $2 asking price.
