Review:

HoPiKo is an Arcade-style game with Platforming elements that has you jumping from each platform directly to another within line of sight trying to get to the goal as quickly as possible.

The core gameplay here is entertaining – it’s really satisfying to chain jumps going from one platform to another to another quickly. However, while this game encourages this fast-paced play, at the same time it makes sure things will be frustrating by having deaths bring players not only to the beginning of the level, but the beginning of the series of levels you’re currently in. This means you’ll be repeating a lot of the same levels over and over again because you failed at a later one, which gets tedious quickly.

The presentation here is good, with a simple, stylized look that does a good job of representing the game’s conceit of being a computer program fighting against an invading virus. The sound is also delightfully punchy, doing a good job of bringing you into the action.

I just wish the action in this game wasn’t so damn frustrating. There are a lot of elements in HoPiKo of an excellent fast-paced Arcade-style game, but the decision to punish players by sending them back multiple levels when they make a mistake saps much of the enjoyment this game provides. If you’re patient, this still might be a fun time for you, but otherwise it’s not worth the frustration.

tl;dr – HoPiKo is an Arcade-style game with Platforming elements, where you are jumping directly from platform to platform within line of sight. The core gameplay here is fun, but the game is made frustrating and tedious by penalizing players’ mistakes by tossing them back multiple levels. Patient players may enjoy this, but everyone else is better off avoiding it.
