Review:

Hue is a Puzzle-Platformer with a simple gimmick – Players control the background color, and any structures or objects with a color matching the background will disappear when the background is that color. Using this, players will push boxes and solve puzzles to collect keys to doors and proceed onwards.

The puzzle design in this game makes good use of the premise, making you really think about how and where to move, and how to change the colors to solve puzzles. The game also puts it to use in platforming sections, where you need to change colors to make a platform appear, or remove a hazard.

As for the presentation, while this game uses simple 2D graphics, the use of color here is fittingly beautiful, with the colored backgrounds making for some really stunning contrast with the black foregrounds and characters. This game also has a lovely somber piano score, and a beautifully-narrated story that plays out as you’re playing through it, although the story itself is a bit cheesy.

Be aware, this isn’t a particularly long game – it only takes about 4-5 hours to play through. However, it’s a good time while it lasts.

All told, Hue is a pretty good entry in the Puzzle-Platformer genre. It doesn’t do anything super-revolutionary (Runbow uses much the same gimmick in a less-puzzly game), but what it does, it does well, with some really nice visuals, and fans of the genre would do well to check it out.

tl;dr – Hue is a Platform-Puzzler that has players changing the color of the background to make colorful objects blend into it to solve puzzles. It’s not a new or revolutionary idea, but it’s done very well here, with an excellent presentation that makes good use of contrast to emphasize its colorful presentation. Definitely a worthwhile game for fans of the genre, so long as you don’t mind its short length.
