Review:
Hulu is a Video Application and service that started in 2007, and in the time since it has reached numerous platforms, including multiple videogame platforms. In 2017, Nintendo joined that list of platforms. I should note that Hulu requires a subscription, with rates starting at $7/month.
While Hulu has always played second banana to Netflix, and now to its own sister service Disney+, neither of those services are available yet on Nintendo Switch. Even so, this is not to say that Hulu is only worth looking at on Switch for this reason. In the time since it launched, Hulu has gained a surprisingly solid library of content, and much in the same way Netflix has produced its own unique content, so too has Hulu – The Handmaid’s Tale, the Animaniacs rebooted series, and the upcoming Futurama continuation are just a few of the many shows and movies the service has brought to life.
Supposedly, Hulu allows users in one of its ad-free subscription tiers download some of its videos for later use, but I could not access this option on my Nintendo Switch (and my subscription does not have ads), despite multiple places online saying it’s possible. Perhaps this was an option available in earlier versions of the software but has since been removed? In any case, this option would have proven especially useful for Nintendo Switch owners to watch shows on the go, and it’s disappointing that it doesn’t appear to be present.
The other issue to address here is touchscreen support… or rather, the complete lack thereof. For whatever reason, the Nintendo Switch version of Hulu must be controller using a traditional gamepad, which isn’t horrible, but it is a missed opportunity.
Overall, Hulu on Switch is…. Pretty much Hulu on Switch. And hey, that’s a good thing! Hulu is great! It may not generally be seen on par with Netflix and Disney+, and it may be missing some of its features on Switch, but overall those who subscribe to this streaming service will find the Nintendo Switch version of the application to be perfectly serviceable.
tl;dr – Hulu is a streaming Video Application for watching TV shows and movies. The Nintendo Switch version seems to lack the ability to download content, and there’s no touchscreen support, but otherwise it works fine, and has some great content… if you pay for a subscription.
