Genre: Arcade
Players: 1
.
Review: I Wanna Fly is a One-Button Mobile-style Arcade game where players take the role of a penguin who hitches a ride on a rocket so he can jump out and get the experience of flying. Players tap the button to slow their descent to dodge obstacles and grab coins that are flying by on the way down.
The visuals here are simple and not very impressive, though there is at least a decent variety to them that adds a sense of progression as you get farther and farther down. The game also has a fairly catchy chiptune song that plays as you’re falling.
The gameplay isn’t terrible, and does a good job of giving players that feeling of wanting to beat their previous record, but the game is just a bit too unforgiving, making the game end if players touch the top or bottom of the screen, and making the character move both up and down too quickly to control well.
Also, I suppose I should mention that this game does support a touchscreen, for those who want the full mobile experience… but it adds nothing to the game, since you’re just doing the same thing you do with a button, and blocking part of the screen to do it.
In the end, I Wanna Fly is an okay time-waster, but the speed your character moves and the game’s unforgiving nature make it less compelling than it might’ve been otherwise. If you’re looking for something to kill a few minutes on the Switch, there are worse ways to do it… but there are much better ways, too.
tl;dr – I Wanna Fly is a Mobile-style One-Button Arcade game where you press the button to dodge things on the screen and collect coins. The core gameplay is compelling, but marred by controls that move your character too quickly up and down and are too unforgiving if you hit the edges of the screen. Not a terrible game, but there are better options out there.
