Review:
Ibb & Obb is a Puzzle-Platformer originally released on PlayStation 3 in 2013 and later ported to other platforms, with the Nintendo Switch getting the game in 2020. This is a game with a heavy focus on co-op play. So heavy, in fact, that the game can only be played with two players. Beyond that, the game’s other unique trait is its focus on gravity-flipped top and bottom portions of its world that require player interaction to pass through.
This game’s presentation is simple, but appealing, with the colorful minimalist world and its objects depicted with simple shapes colored with a soft gradient, and backed by a soothing soundtrack. The result is a game that has a pretty chill feel to it, which lets the focus of the game lie on its puzzles.
As for the puzzles, this game features some pretty well-designed puzzles that push players to communicate, coordinate, consider things like timing and momentum, location and movement. Nothing here is mechanically complex or confusing (your only control inputs are left and right movement and a jump), but the game makes good use of its core concepts to drive these puzzles.
There’s not too much else to say about this one, beyond the one obvious complaint – a game that requires two players is by design going to limit who will be able to enjoy it to those players who want to play with another. However, if you are looking for a solid co-op experience, this game does a great job delivering gameplay that pushes players to work together.
In the end, Ibb & Obb is a solid co-op Puzzle-Platformer that’s well worth playing if you have someone to play with. There’s nothing complex or revolutionary here, but what’s here is done well, and the co-op puzzles it presents do a lot with a little. Fans of Puzzle-Platformers looking for a solid entry to play with a friend should be pleased with this one.
tl;dr – Ibb & Obb is a co-op focused Puzzle-Platformer that requires two players to play. However, if you do have a friend to play with, this is a solid entry in the genre that makes good use of its simple mechanics to deliver some great co-op gameplay.
