Review:
Icey is a combo-heavy Action-Platformer with a sci-fi setting and pretty generic anime plot… or at least that’s what’s on the surface. Stray just a bit from the path and this game reveals that this is actually a “meta” game that’s more than anything a commentary about itself.
Probably the best-known example of this sort of thing in recent years is The Stanley Parable, but where that game was a “walking simulator”-style Graphic Adventure, Icey applies this treatment to the Action-Platformer.
In theory, this has some interesting potential, although it’s not without its problems. Namely, the narrator’s performance as he takes the player to task for not following his instructions leaves something to be desired, sounding forced and artificial. It also doesn’t help that the writing for the narrator is a bit off, and nowhere near as witty as Stanley Parable’s narrator.
As for the gameplay itself, it’s pretty good, although enemies can at times be sponges for damage, which can get tedious. Still, the actual fighting systems here are solid and fun to work with.
In the audiovisual department, this game is… good. Nothing extraordinary, but it gets the job done, save for the issues I mentioned with the narrator.
In the end, the “meta” nature of Icey is amusing but not quite as well-done as one would want from that sort of thing. However, the actual action here is good, and if you’re coming to the game for that, you should be pleased.
tl;dr – Icey is a combo-heavy Action-Platformer with a meta narrative that has the player struggling against a demanding narrator. The meta elements of this game are a bit of a mixed bag, but the action itself is decent.
