Review:

Immortal Redneck is a First-Person Shooter that incorporates elements of roguelikes, a combination that elevates what would otherwise be a sub-par shooter into a strangely compelling one.

The presentation here is nothing impressive. Graphically, this game would have been seen as extraordinary two generations ago. In fact, in terms of the game’s theme, it’s oddly reminiscent of the two decade-old game Serious Sam, another FPS that featured a crass macho idiot shooting his way through Egyptian pyramids, so it can’t even really claim to be novel in that regard.

The FPS gameplay also takes a page from that book, being throwback to the simple, straightforward sorta’ shooters that used to thrive back in the day – if you remember the days of circle-strafing, you know exactly what to expect here.

To their credit, the folks behind this game worked in a lot of options to adapt the control to your playstyle, not only allowing you to supplement the standard controls with motion controls, but actually letting you change the sensitivity of both the X and Y axis independently.

However, the real draw here is the Roguelike elements, which give much-needed depth to the otherwise mindless gameplay. After each death, you can spend the money you earned to upgrade your stats and abilities, or even unlock other characters to play as, and hopefully give yourself an edge so you can make it farther into the randomly-generated maze of rooms inside the pyramid.

It’s no Doom or Wolfenstein, but if you’re looking for some old-school FPS action with some modern enhancements, Immortal Redneck brings something interesting worth checking out to the Switch.

tl;dr – Immortal Redneck is an old-school FPS with Roguelike elements that add compelling depth to the otherwise simplistic gameplay. Fans of the FPS genre might find this a fun distraction.
