Review:
Implosion is an Action-RPG with some 2-Stick Shooter elements that has players piloting a human-sized mech through the futuristic ruins of Earth, fighting off hordes of mechanized mutants along the way.
Visually, this game looks good but unspectacular. There’s a good level of polish here, and the framerate and resolution are both decent, but aside from perhaps your own mech, everything in the game is pretty forgettable-looking.
The music, also, is pretty forgettable action fare, and as for the sound… well, as you play, the game will be bombarding you with its story through voice-over. The voice acting here is decent, but the story is disposable sci-fi fare that you’ll quickly tire of, and soon enough you’ll just be wanting the chatter over your headset to just shut up so you can focus on the action.
Combat in this game is, at least at its core, fairly satisfying, making use of a nice two-button combo system. However, it gets repetitive pretty quickly, with enemies that aren’t very smart, and can generally be button-mashed into submission, or button-mashed with an occasional dodge roll thrown in. On some occasions you’ll have to use your second stick to engage enemies via 2-Stick Shooter controls, but this is frustrated both by the fact that you automatically lock on to enemies, eliminating the need to aim, as well as the issue that enemies are bullet sponges and you’ll want to spend as little time shooting as possible as a result.
While the game does offer collectible loot to upgrade your mech, this has issues as well. This loot mainly just changes your stats, and doesn’t add the sort of variety or depth you might find in something like Diablo. What’s more, the areas in the game are short, meaning there’s not much exploring to be done, and narrow, which means that you won’t be using the space to manage foes in combat.
Without deeper combat or a more engaging loot system, Implosion doesn’t really have much to offer players, especially when there are games on the Switch that offer similar gameplay but do everything much better. That’s not to say what’s here is bad, it just doesn’t do anything standout. Players are better off just sticking with games like Diablo III if they want a game to fight countless enemies and collect loot, or a game like Bayonetta 2 or Astral Chain if they want to fight enemies using a fun combat system. Next to games like those, there’s little reason to play Implosion.
tl;dr – Implosion is an Action-RPG with some 2-Stick Shooter mechanics that has players fighting mutants using a human-size mech. The game has some enjoyable combat and a promising loot system, but the combat gets repetitive quickly and the loot system isn’t varied or deep enough to be engaging. Oh, and the 2-Stick Shooter elements are poorly-implemented. This isn’t a terrible game, but players interested in this sort of thing have multiple better options on the Switch.
