Review:
Indie Gems Bundle – JRPG Edition, released on Nintendo Switch in 2020, is a compilation of two RPGs – Dungeon Rushers, first released on Nintendo Switch in 2018, and Robothorium, first released on Nintendo Switch in 2019. The name of this bundle is a pretty big misnomer, as neither of these games is actually a JRPG. The developer of both games, Goblinz Studio, resides in France, and neither of these games imitates the look or style of a JRPG. However, regardless of the name, the question is how good are these games, and is this a good package overall?
Well, I have reviewed these games separately. Here’s what I had to say about each:
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dungeon Rushers | Turn-Based RPG / Dungeon Crawler | 1 | C- |
tl;drDungeon Rushers is a Turn-Based RPG with Dungeon Crawler elements. It does neither of these things in an especially good or memorable way. There are plenty of other RPGs more worthy of your attention on the Nintendo Switch, don’t bother with this one. | |||
| Robothorium | Turn-Based RPG | 1 | D+ |
tl;drRobothorium is a Turn-Based RPG where players direct a robotic uprising, and while this game’s topic matter and ethical dilemmas are ripe with potential, that potential is spoiled by horribly excessive loading screens, terrible interface issues, and poorly-conveyed information vital to effectively playing an RPG. This game is far too frustrating to be enjoyable. | |||
In short, I didn’t think that either of these games was especially good. Between the two, Dungeon Rushers was more playable, but it was also bland, unimaginative, and completely forgettable. Robothorium at least has an interesting setting that it uses for some enticing ethical situations, but unfortunately that game suffers from a litany of horrible problems that make it torturous to play.
I suppose, if you absolutely wanted to get one or both of these games, this package would make for a good deal at least – at $20, it’s only $5 more than each of these games normally sells for individually. However, it’s hard to consider this a bargain when I wouldn’t recommend players to get either of these two games.
I suppose that’s what it comes down to, in the end. Indie Gems Bundle – JRPG Edition is a compilation of two RPGs that’s comparatively a good value, but it doesn’t matter because neither of these games is very good. And just to sour things a little bit more, these games aren’t even actual JRPGs. If you’re looking for a good deal on JRPGs, definitely look elsewhere.
tl;dr – Indie Gems Bundle – JRPG Edition is a compilation of two RPGs, Dungeon Rushers and Robothorium, neither of which is actually a JRPG. Unfortunately, neither of them is very good, either. Because of this, while this bundle has a good price comparatively, I cannot recommend anyone to get it.
