Review:

Jump Rope Challenge is a family-friendly free-to-play Exercise Game that’s pretty simple. You hold the Joy-Cons like a jump rope, you use the Joy-Cons’ gyroscopic motion-control to swing them like a jump rope (while jumping, if you really want to get into the spirit of the thing), and the game counts your jumps.

The presentation here is pretty simple, with cutesy cartoon rabbits following your motions, and with a catchy little tune playing out one note for each jump. It feels quickly thrown-together, but it’s still surprisingly endearing, and the game even lets you cycle through different outfits for your bunny, and occasionally puts pictures in the background like kittens or various locations. Very cute.

The motion control here isn’t super-accurate, but doesn’t really need to be. The game doesn’t penalize players for missing a jump, and it’s clearly not intended to be a precise measure of your exercise routine, but more of a cheerleader urging you to keep going. To that end, the game will keep track of your score on a calendar, and even allow players to set daily goals for themselves (from 100-900 jumps in multiples of 100).

This game also offers a 2-player mode where each player holds a separate Joy-Con. I suppose it’s up to you whether you want to act like you’re both jumping the same rope, jump holding something else in your other hand (an extra Joy-Con, a spare carrot… doesn’t really matter), or just pantomime the motions. In this mode, each player’s jumps add to a total score, so it’s not a competition so much as a coordinated effort.

Is it fun? Well, it’s pantomimed jump rope with cute visuals and sounds. So I suppose if you like jumping rope, sure! Is it better than a real jump rope? Well, you’re not going to trip yourself on a cord, but you’re also not going to have to worry too much about the challenge of timing your jumps, so whether that’s better is your call.

Okay, but is Jump Rope Challenge a good game? I’d say that this is a fun little fitness application more than it is an actual game, and I do very much mean “little”. There’s no real depth here, no real goal beyond your own personal fitness goals. But for a free game looking to give players an entertaining way to get in some exercise, it’s a decent little distraction, and it’s worth a download, if only to try it out and see if you want to add it to your daily fitness routine.

tl;dr – Jump Rope Challenge is a family-friendly free-to-play Fitness Game that has you using the Joy-Cons’ motion-controls to mimic the motion of jumping rope. This is a very simple game that doesn’t look to provide a challenge or any greater depth or purpose beyond giving players an entertaining way to get in a little exercise, and to that end it succeeds. There’s nothing truly mind-blowing here, but for the price of $0, it’s well worth downloading to give a try.
