Review:
Just Glide is a One-Button Mobile-Style Arcade Game in the same vein as Flappy Bird. Players press a button to bump up a paper airplane in flight, their only interaction with the game, and using only this they must dodge obstacles, collect pickups, and survive as long as possible. This game was released in 2019 on mobile devices (I think – it’s hard to be certain), and ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2020.
The presentation here is pretty lackluster. The game features extremely low-poly visuals, and looks pretty repetitive on top of that. However, even beyond that, the game’s visuals cause problems when players have to fly through a series of rings – the camera’s changing perspective on these rings makes it hard to judge where you’ll collide with them, and as a result flying through them is always a nerve-wracking experience where you can never be quite sure whether you’ll make it or hit one of them.
The sound here is just as lacking as the visuals. This game features no music, only the sounds of various objects as they come on-screen, or when the player collides with them. The aforementioned rings for some reason make an odd muffled crashing noise when the player flies safely through one. Perhaps this was meant to sound like whooshing wind, but if so, it doesn’t succeed.
As for the gameplay… there’s not much to talk about here. If you’ve played Flappy Bird or one of its clones, you know what to expect here. Extremely repetitive, with very limited control over your character. Add in the aforementioned camera issues and you have a pretty poor version of a game that was already pretty bad.
At the very least, this game gives players the option to play with touchscreen controls in handheld mode, though I can’t see much reason why they would want to – I tend to feel you get more precision playing with a button. However, it’s nice that the option is there, regardless.
And that’s Just Glide… a sub-par Mobile-Style Arcade Game that follows in the footsteps of Flappy Bird, another sub-par game. If you really want something similar to Flappy Bird on your Nintendo Switch, this game will only set you back a dollar and some change. But honestly, why bother? This game just isn’t very fun, and it costing less doesn’t make it any more fun.
tl;dr – Just Glide is a One-Button Mobile-Style Arcade Game that plays like Flappy Bird. Unfortunately, it suffers from repetitive game design and camera issues that make it hard to judge where obstacles are. It may be a game that’s dirt cheap, but you get what you pay for.
