Review:

Croc’s World Run is an Auto-Runner-style Platformer that, much like the three numerical Croc’s World games, is a shameless rip-off of the original Super Mario Bros., though this time, that formula is altered a bit in that this game is also a shameless rip-off of another Mario game – the Auto-Runner Super Mario Run. So now, in addition to jumping on goombas snails to subdue them, and jumping up to hit question mark star blocks to get a mushroom helmet, you’ll also be pushed forward in a manner similar to Super Mario Run, complete with wall-jumps that allow you to move back, pause blocks that allow you to adjust your timing, and “jump back” blocks that allow you to, well, jump back.

It feels like a bit of a cruel joke that the biggest change to this series of copycat games came when the developers decided to copy a second game, but credit where it is due, the focus on aping the mechanics of Super Mario Run does mean that some attention was paid to the core gameplay here and ensuring that this gameplay had some added nuance in the light of the removal of the ability to move left or control your progress to the right. Having said that, Croc’s World Run is still a mediocre game that does little to distinguish itself or move the genre forward.

And while the game’s mechanics had to be altered to adapt to the new gameplay style, the presentation did not, which means we once again have the same presentation of Croc’s World 2 and 3 – a cartoony, colorful presentation that is still devoid of personality, with the exact same graphics as those games, and the same terrible, repetitive single song.

Croc’s World Run is the biggest shake-up this lazy series of Mario copycat games has seen, and that alone gives it an edge over its predecessors… but it’s still a woefully uninspired and unoriginal game that does nothing to distinguish itself or set itself apart. If you’re looking for an Auto-Runner, this one is fine, but don’t expect anything special.

tl;dr – Croc’s World Run is an Auto-Runner that pairs the shameless rip-off of Super Mario Bros. of the three numbered Croc’s World games with gameplay that’s a shameless rip-off of Super Mario Run. Ironically, it’s the most change this series has ever seen, but it’s still an unoriginal and uninspired game that does nothing to set itself apart.
