Review:
Crysis Remastered Trilogy is a Compilation of remastered versions of the original three Crysis games, with the original releases on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 ranging from 2007-2013, the remastered version of Crysis coming to Switch in 2020, and the remastered versions of Crysis 2 and 3 coming alongside this package in 2021.
Here is what I thought of each of the games in this collection:
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crysis Remastered | First-Person Shooter | 1 | B+ |
tl;drCrysis is a First-Person Shooter that’s been a legendary benchmark on PCs for over a decade, and not only can it run on the Nintendo Switch, but it runs rather well, albeit with the framerate taking a hit in some busy areas. Still, it’s a solid port of a solid single-player First-Person Shooter, and if you’re a fan of the genre it’s a game you should definitely give a look. | |||
| Crysis 2 Remastered | First-Person Shooter | 1 | B |
tl;drCrysis 2 Remastered is an improved port of the solid First-Person Shooter with a performance that’s well beyond what we could have reasonably expected from Nintendo’s underpowered handheld. This port lacks the original game’s multiplayer, and it’s a port of a game that’s nowhere near as impressive or influential as the first game, but Crysis 2 is still a superb First-Person Shooter, and this is a fantastic way to play the game. | |||
| Crysis 3 Remastered | First-Person Shooter | 1 | A- |
tl;drCrysis 3 Remastered is an absolute marvel of a First-Person Shooter on the Nintendo Switch, featuring some of the best graphics on the platform, with visuals and performance that far outpaces prior console versions of the game. What’s more, the gameplay has been much-improved over previous entries in the series, with better enemy AI, improved stealth, better pacing and variety. This is an absolute must-have First-Person Shooter campaign. It’s a shame the Nintendo Switch version drops the multiplayer mode that was in the original, but in all other respects, this is a marvel of a port to Nintendo’s handheld, and absolutely worth a look for any fans of the genre. | |||
In short, all three games are solid First-Person Shooters, with the first game being the most iconic game of the bunch, the second game being a solid but slightly disappointing sequel, and the third game being a triumphant game that improves on nearly every element of its predecessors.
And because this is the Crysis franchise, and graphics and performance are one of the most important things to address when it comes to any version of these games, the short version is that Crysis Remastered is a respectable port of the original game that runs in 720p dynamic resolution in both docked and portable mode, with a 30FPS framerate that’s mostly stable but dips down toward 20FPS when the action gets intense, and with the end result being a game that slightly edges out the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game in terms of performance. Crysis 2 and 3’s remastered versions, on the other hand, both put the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of those respective games to shame, with both featuring a rock-solid 30FPS framerate, 900p dynamic resolution in docked mode and 720p dynamic resolution in portable mode.
It should also be noted that while I’m comparing these games to their performance on last-gen consoles, these games still look phenomenal even by today’s standards – there’s a reason this series was used to benchmark hardware. Of course, I need to note that the Nintendo Switch versions of these games fall well behind the performance of the releases of the remastered Crysis games on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X/S, but anyone expecting otherwise is deluding themselves. Honestly, seeing these games running this well and looking this good on Nintendo’s portable console is nothing short of astounding, and Crysis 3 in particular is a graphical marvel on Nintendo’s underpowered console, and one of the best-looking games the Nintendo Switch has ever seen.
Beyond questions of graphics and performance, the port to Nintendo Switch brings a noteworthy extra feature to these games, and it removes a major feature. On the plus side, all three games support optional gyroscopic motion control. However, the multiplayer features have been completely removed from all of the games in this collection. While the Nintendo Switch is not unique in this regard (the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X/S versions of the remasters also include no multiplayer), it is still particularly disappointing for Nintendo Switch owners, as the console lacks solid multiplayer First-Person Shooters.
Finally of course we should address the question of value in this Compilation, and I have to say, at $50, this is an absolute steal. Each of these games currently retails for $30 on its own, so buying all three for $50 is a massive discount, and given that you’re talking about three campaigns that comprise about 30 hours or so of excellent, visually-stunning First-Person Shooter gameplay, this is an outstanding package for any First-Person Shooter fan on the Nintendo Switch.
If you are one of those Nintendo Switch-owning First-Person Shooter fans and you dropped the ball on buying Crysis Remastered when it released last year, you have now been given the perfect opportunity to pick up the entire trilogy here at a reasonable price. These games look and perform extremely well on Nintendo Switch (Crysis 3 in particular is impeccable), and all feature excellent gameplay. Only the loss of multiplayer and a few other minor issues mar this otherwise spectacular Compilation.
tl;dr – Crysis Remastered Trilogy is a Compilation of phenomenal ports of three solid First-Person Shooters that are still visually stunning, outpacing prior console releases of the series. These games are a marvel to see running this well on Nintendo Switch, and only the lack of the original games’ multiplayer and a few other minor issues make this anything less than a trilogy of perfect ports. And at $50, this Compilation is an absolute steal, and any fan of First-Person Shooters on the Nintendo Switch should absolutely give this package a look.
