Review:

De Blob is a 3D Platformer that was originally released on the Wii, at the time relying on motion controls to flick around the game’s blob-like protagonist named… well, Blob. The game’s visuals have been updated and the control scheme replaced, but otherwise the game is much as it was over a decade ago.

For those unfamiliar with the game, society has been taken over by a totalitarian horde of color-sapping baddies called Inkt, and much of the gameplay involves Blob sapping up the stolen colors and using them to paint the landscape by jumping around within it.

It’s a unique concept, although it’s made less fun than it should be thanks to a combination of slow gameplay and at times unwieldy controls. Those who didn’t like the “waggle” controls of the original game will find the switch to more traditional controls here doesn’t really help all that much in giving the game more precision, and those who liked the waggle controls will find no option to use the Switch’s motion controls to replicate them.

Still, the game does get some credit for its unique premise and how controlling Blob is still fun, even without that precision. Still, the game could do with a bit more variety – it can definitely get repetitive at times.

De Blob is a decent port of a decent game, but it’s lacking features that would be nice to have, and the game itself hasn’t aged terribly well. It’s still decent, still worth playing, but it’s not as fresh and exciting as it was in its original release.

tl;dr – De Blob is a port of a 3D platformer originally released on the Wii, and the transition has updated the graphics and replaced motion controls with more traditional controls. The game’s controls still feel a bit loose, and the game shows its age some with repetitive gameplay, but it’s still a fun time bouncing around cities and splashing color onto the landscape.
