Review:
Deadly Fighter 2, released on the Nintendo Switch in 2019, appears to be a slightly-altered version of Deadly Fighter, a game that publisher Baltoro Games lists on their website, but that I can’t seem to find on any store front or even track down its platform. So I suppose that means that for all intents and purposes this is the only version of the game available. This is an Arcade-style game that has you taking the role of a warrior fighting off hordes of ninjas.
The presentation here is simple but mostly pretty good, with a slightly-cartoony version of a medieval Asian town in various seasons in the background and 3D characters in the foreground fighting. The visuals are a bit repetitive, and the animations are a bit stiff, but it’s clean and colorful and overall looks nice. The sound here is a bit less successful – the warlike music is boring and repetitive, and the game’s sounds seem like the sort of stuff you’d hear in a cheap mobile game.
The gameplay of Deadly Fighter 2 has you fighting off enemies on either side using attacks, blocks, and special moves. It’s all fairly simple, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing – One Finger Death Punch 2 did much the same thing with great results. Unfortunately, the controls here are stiff and a bit unresponsive.
The moment you encounter an enemy who doesn’t immediately crumble to your attacks, you’ll feel the game’s problems stacking up -attacks are delayed, and what’s worse, they’re queued up, which means that even if you press a button to block while your character is attacking, their next move might be a second attack if you pressed that button a few times previously. Also, if an enemy dodges behind you, it’s a pain to turn around to block them, and it’s especially bad when you’re flanked.
Deadly Fighter 2 isn’t entirely devoid of fun – it can be enjoyable to slice your way through ninjas left and right. But the game’s repetitive nature combined with its flawed gameplay mean that this is a game you’re not likely to stick with for very long.
tl;dr – Deadly Fighter 2 is an Arcade-style game where players fend off hordes of enemy ninjas attacking from the left and right. The simple game mechanics and nice visuals are appealing, but the flawed and repetitive gameplay make this a game you’re not likely to want to play for more than a few minutes at a time.
