Review:
Death Coming is an odd sort of puzzle game where players take the role of a new apprentice to Death, who has decided to take a more active role in bringing in new souls to cart off to the afterlife. As such, in each level you will find numerous people milling about, and your job is to manipulate the environment to kill as many of them as possible. So basically, if you’ve seen any of the Final Destination movies, picture that with you taking the role of the malicious force setting up everyone’s deaths.
Of course, you can’t just kill people directly. You have to mess with the world around them, often timing things right as people walk in just the right place, or setting up a series of events. In the first level, for example, shutting umbrellas near a pool will convince more people to decide to go swimming… and you can then cause an overhead electrical wire to fall into the pool with them.
The gameplay in this game mostly takes the form of moving a cursor around to see what you can interact with, and then trying to figure out how you can use that interaction to mess with the people milling about the level. There’s a lot of trial and error going on here, which is a bit frustrating, but on the good side, there seems to be a fair amount of variety in the ways you can mess with the world to cause death and destruction.
Vicually, the game is presented in a simple cartoony style that works well enough for the game. It has the effect of looking like a videogamey version of a Where’s Waldo book, except the people and various parts of the environment are all constantly moving around. Nothing impressive, but it works for the game.
I suppose my main complaint with the game is just due to an element baked into the game – the entire premise is that you’re looking around for stuff to do. You never feel like you’re being especially creative here. Rather, you’re just looking for the things the game’s designers made for you to do, and that makes for a less engaging experience in my eyes.
Still, for a fun little time waster with a demented sense of humor, Death Coming does what it sets out to do well enough. If you watch a trailer of the game and find yourself giggling, well, you may want to see a therapist, but so long as you’re not a danger to yourself or others, you may find yourself enjoying this game.
tl;dr – Death Coming is a Puzzle/Simulation game where you’re looking through what is basically a moving Where’s Waldo scene, trying to find the best ways to manipulate the environment to cause a massive number of people to die. It’s a fun idea, but it’s limited by the fact that you’re looking for things to do rather than actively being creative.
