Review:
Debris Infinity is a 2-Stick Shooter with arcade-style gameplay and a neon aesthetic that are very similar to Geometry Wars. Extremely similar to Geometry Wars. Basically, this game is Geometry Wars. With a little Asteroids thrown in for good measure.
That’s not to say this game doesn’t do anything original. In fact, one of this game’s key features is a “Slow-Mo” ability that’s really unique, allowing you to basically go into a “bullet time”, giving you a moment to breathe, and more precision to aim and move. And while the game’s graphics are already pretty, when you activate Slow-Mo and start blowing stuff up, the slow-motion fireworks are actually a delight to behold.
The game isn’t without its flaws, though. It lacks the power-up progression of Geometry Wars 1 (power-ups here seem awarded almost randomly), and doesn’t have the variety of game modes of subsequent Geometry Wars games – here, you have an endless mode, a “get a high score in a time limit” mode, and a “Waves” mode (comparable to Waves in Geometry Wars, but with each wave representing a different enemy or enemy combination), as well as a competitive multiplayer mode and… yeah, don’t even bother with the co-op, since it’s one of those “one person steers, the other person mans the gun” sorta’ modes that make little sense for a game like this.
The other issue this game has is its sound. For the most part, it’s fine, with good noises and music that matches the pace of the action. However, by default there’s an annoying female announcer that constantly speaks over the action. Thankfully, you can change the settings for this. Do yourself a favor and go into the options menu and turn that off.
Overall, as a Geometry Wars clone, Debris Infinity is surprisingly good, and though it never quite reaches Geometry Wars’ brilliance, it’s still top-notch and even brings a few unique ideas to the table. And especially since none of the Geometry Wars games are actually on the Switch, if you’re feeling like getting that sort of experience, this game should be a must-have for you.
tl;dr – Debris Infinity is a Two-Stick Shooter that’s like a mash-up of Geometry Wars and Asteroids. It looks good, plays well, and the Slow-Mo feature actually brings something interesting to the table. The game is a bit short on features, but what’s here is top-notch.
