Review:

Demon Pit, released on multiple platforms in 2019, including Nintendo Switch, is a First-Person Shooter with a simple premise – you are a new soul sent to fight in an arena in hell, and you must blast away as many demons as you can before they take you down.

In terms of presentation, Demon Pit is nothing fancy, featuring fairly simple 3D characters and an energetic but forgettable soundtrack, this game is all about keeping the emphasis on the speedy combat, and to that end the game is successful, boasting a silky-smooth framerate and a crisp resolution.

As for that combat itself, if you’re looking for depth, you came to the wrong place. This is about as far from cerebral as First-Person Shooters get. However, that’s not to say this game is dumb. Yes, the enemy AI is moronic and single-minded, and fights with enemies can often devolve into running backwards around the arena and picking off the demons as they make a fruitless effort to catch up to you. However, after a few waves to get you used to things, Demon Pit pushes players to get really familiar with its grapple mechanic, and those who don’t will die very quickly.

This mechanic promises to add a new dimension to the combat – there are numerous anchor points around the arena, both on the ground and up above, and players can pull themselves to any of these simply by aiming at it and pressing the left trigger. As the game’s arena gets more difficult to maneuver, players will have to figure out the best way to do so to avoid enemies, as well as the hazards that pop up.

The grappling and the constantly-shifting arena help to keep Demon Pit from becoming stale, but even with these elements, there are still times when the game starts to feel repetitive, especially when you die and must restart the game all the way at wave 1, working through all the exact same waves of enemies all over again. Also, while Irespect this game’s focus on fast-paced action, I felt like things were maybe a bit too fast here, and perhaps because of that it felt a bit difficult to aim in this game compared to other shooters. It would have been nice if this game allowed Nintendo Switch players to use the touchscreen or gyroscopic motion controls to aim, but sadly neither seems to be supported.

In the end, Demon Pit is a fun dumb fast-paced First-Person Shooter, but not one you’re likely to play for more than a few minutes at a time, thanks to how repetitive it is. If you’re looking for something to blast away a few enemies real quick while waiting for the bus or at a doctor’s office, Demon Pit will likely entertain you, but you won’t want to play this game for much longer than that.

tl;dr – Demon Pit is a First-Person Shooter that has players blasting away hordes of demons in hell. This game is fast-paced and fun, but also shallow and repetitive. Good for a few minutes at a time of mindless shooting, but not much more than that.
