Review:
Detention is a Graphic Adventure with horror elements that places you in the role of a grade school student in Taiwan in the 1960s during a Communist dictatorship. One day, after falling asleep in class, he wakes up to an empty classroom, warnings of an oncoming storm, and a creepy situation that becomes increasingly horrific. Soon the boy is joined by a girl, also trapped in the school, and play will switch between them as the story progresses.
This game’s visuals are simple and largely monochromatic, with unimpressive animation… however, while on a technical level this game is very unimpressive, the game’s art design and sound design are top-notch, ramping up the creepiness factor really high. This game felt surprisingly close in tone to the Silent Hill games, which for a horror game is a high compliment.
The gameplay here is a bit less interesting. The game’s characters move at a slow pace, puzzles never feel too involving, and the “hold your breath” mechanic that has you sneaking by enemies rather than fighting them gets frustrating because any time you mess up it will almost certainly result in you dying and having to start over.
If you have the patience for Detention’s tedious gameplay, its atmosphere and imagery are well worth experiencing. Fans of horror games on the Switch should give this game a look.
tl;dr – Detention is a Graphic Adventure game with heavy horror elements about grade school students in 1960s Taiwan stuck in a hellish nightmare. Despite its graphical limitations it does a great job building a creepy atmosphere, but the gameplay is tedious and frustrating.
