Review:

Note: This game is included in the Devious Dungeon Collection with the first Devious Dungeon.

Devious Dungeon 2 is an Action-Platformer with some light Roguelike elements released on mobile devices in 2015 and ported to PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Nintendo Switch in 2019, with the game being released on PC a year after that in 2020. Once again, this game has players taking the role of a warrior plunging into the randomly shifting dungeons beneath a castle, this time adventuring purely to collect loot. If you read my review of the first game, this review will seem pretty familiar to you, as the games are extremely similar.

The presentation here makes use of some pretty simple pixel art visuals, yet despite this the framerate is still a bit on the low side. Why a game this simple would still fail to maintain a smooth framerate, I can’t imagine, but the result is a game that looks even less impressive. This is paired with a repetitive, forgettable soundtrack.

Those hoping for a game that builds on what the first game introduced to present something significantly better here will be disappointed – Devious Dungeon 2 plays less like a sequel and more like Devious Dungeon 1.5: More Devious Dungeon. There are marginal improvements – players now have three classes to choose from, each with a unique class ability or buff. There’s a bit more variety in enemy types and environmental hazards. And there’s also some variety in weapon type that goes beyond simple stat changes. But I must stress that these changes are minimal, and in the end this feels very much like the same game.

That means once again heading into the randomized dungeons, slaying enemies and collecting loot to upgrade your weapon and armor, which players keep even if their character dies. And once again, upgrade options are few, enemies and levels are still somewhat repetitive despite the randomization, and as a result of all this sameyness, the game gets boring very quickly.

While Devious Dungeon 2 is a marginal improvement over the first game, what this game needed was a huge overhaul, especially when Rogue Legacy was already doing what this series does but a great deal better in every way. As a result, this series once again falls far short of where it needs to be, and players are much better off sticking with other games.

tl;dr – Devious Dungeon 2, like its predecessor, is an Action-Platformer with some light Roguelike elements that has players delving into a dungeon and collecting loot to power up their character. Unfortunately, this game is only a marginal improvement over the first game when it needed a major overhaul to compete with the likes of Rogue Legacy. Once again, the gameplay here is limited and repetitive, and you’re much better off going with something else.
