Review:

Dig Dog is a Platformer with some light Roguelike elements and a somewhat Arcade-y feel. The gameplay here is fairly simple – you, as a dog, can dig down or to the side, jump or air-dash, and must find your way down to a bone hidden under the Earth, while avoiding damage from enemies.

It’s a fairly simple premise, but it takes on nuances as you continue, with new enemies, and buffs you can purchase in exchange for coins collected from enemies at shops that randomly appear.

While on the surface none of this probably seems to stand out much, in practice this game is surprisingly compelling, thanks largely to the fact that the dog in this game is a joy to control. While there is a bit of an adjustment period as you figure out the game’s mechanics, once you do, it’s quite enjoyable to dig your way through the game’s levels.

The game isn’t without its issues, though. Namely, this game has a high difficulty level, thanks to its unforgiving low health and death sending you back to the beginning of the current world.

As for the game’s presentation, the game’s graphics are done in a fairly simple pixel art style with black characters and platforms against a single-color background. It’s nothing especially extraordinary, but it gets the job done. Also, this game’s chiptune soundtrack is pretty catchy in areas.

All in all, Dig Dog is a solid little platforming game, at least if you have the patience for a very difficult title. It’s not without its faults, but the solid platforming gameplay at its core is definitely worth giving it a try.

tl;dr – Dig Dog is a simple Platformer with Roguelike elements that has you playing as a dog digging through the Earth to get to a bone, avoiding enemies along the way. The game is fairly unforgiving, but still well worth playing thanks to how good the core gameplay is.

Grade: B
