Review:
Ding Dong XL is an Arcade-style game played with a single button, and is fairly straightforward and simple – you’re bouncing a ball back and forth on a field full of objects, trying not to hit any of them as they pass by. However, you can’t just wait until things are perfectly safe -you need to keep going or the edges of the screen will become vulnerable to those same shapes when they touch the sides.
There. I just saved you some trouble figuring that out, because the game itself doesn’t really make all that clear, which is a bit frustrating. There are other subtle rules, like bonus pickups you do want to hit, bonuses for near-misses, and so on, but much of it is stuff it seems you’re expected to learn along the way.
The game has a neon-fused presentation that looks nice enough, and the game’s music is… eh, okay, I guess. And while there are unlockable skins and a “dual” mode with two balls, I do wish there was a bit more variety here.
As it is, Ding Dong XL is a decent time-waster, but it’s lacking that extra something special to really make you want to keep playing it for long periods of time. But for a cheap distraction, it serves its purpose well. Oh, and I have no clue why the game is called Ding Dong XL… that’s just odd.
tl;dr – Ding Dong XL is a decent Arcade-style time-waster where you’re sending a ball back and forth across the screen while trying to avoid colliding with objects. It makes for a decent time-waster, but lacks the depth to be much more than that.
