Don’t Die, Mr Robot! DX is an Arcade-style Bullet Hell Shmup where your character is incapable of actually shooting. Instead, your only way of taking foes out is by collecting fruit that appears, causing it to explode and take out any enemies in its blast radius, and any other fruit, potentially leading to a chain reaction.
“Wait, fruit?” you may ask. Yeah, so this game’s visual presentation seems like it was slapped-together using leftover emojis. The presentation seems like it was put together on a shoestring budget, and does little to make the game appealing beyond having a clean look.
However, while the presentation screams “Smartphone shovelware”, the gameplay is actually really compelling. Compare the gameplay here to the Geometry Wars series’ Pacifist mode for an idea. It’s lots of fun to dodge around enemies and every time you die, there’s very much a “just one more round” quality to everything.
It helps that although the gameplay remains much the same, there’s enough different game modes here to keep things interesting, although the game is lacking the sort of multiplayer features you’d expect a title like this to have.
Still, despite its flaws, I have to admit that Don’t Die, Mr Robot! DX is a good time, and if you’re a fan of dodging bullets in shmup games and can look past a bargain bin presentation, this game could very well surprise you.
tl;dr – Don’t Die, Mr Robot! DX is an Arcade-Style Shmup where you’re dodging enemies and collecting pickups to set off explosions in your wake. Think Geometry Wars’ Pacifism mode. The presentation is horrendous, but the gameplay is strangely compelling and there are enough features here to keep fans of Shmups coming back
