Review:

Dragon Snakes is an Arcade-style game in the same vein as the classic games Snake and Tron Bikes, where you’re moving around a limited arena with an increasingly long snake trying to avoid running into walls or your own tail.

In this version of the game, those “snakes” come in the form of Chinese-style dragons, with butterflies taking the place of the apples that made your tail grow longer. The game supports this aesthetic with a really nice art style that looks a bit like a hand-painted watercolor, matching the theme.

On top of the core game, which just plays like classic Snake, you also have a multiplayer variant that plays a bit like the Tron Bikes game, with you trying to entrap other players with your tail and avoid running into them. It’s a nice inclusion, though it’s disappointing that there aren’t more options, such as playing with bots or playing in a larger arena with 8 players. The game plays well enough, but I feel like giving it a better wealth of options would have really pushed it over the top.

As for what’s here, the one complaint I have is that unlike Snake and Tron, this game does not have a blocky look, nor blocky movement, which can at times make it difficult to determine how close is too close when it comes to running into obstacles. Given that this is the entire point of the game, it’s kinda’ important.

Still, if you’re just looking for a fun time-waster, or something to play with a small group of friends, Dragon Snakes makes for a decent spin on the old Snake/Tron formula. It does a decent, albeit unspectacular, job bringing that formula into the modern day.

tl;dr – Dragon Snakes is an Arcade-style game that plays much like the classic games Snake and Tron. It has a good presentation and plays well enough, but it’s lacking features and the game’s design can make it difficult to judge if you’re too close to an obstacle. It’s okay, but there’s definitely room for improvement.

Grade: C+
