Review:
Drone Fight, unlike what the name seems to imply, is a racing game that has you piloting a drone in a match against others. Players fly through a series of rings and try to be the first to get to the end of each course.
Playing Drone Fight, I can see the potential for something really wonderful here. We rarely get racing games that take place in three dimensions, and some of the courses here actually have some thought and imagination to them, having you go through valleys, cave systems, and more than just normal boring terrain. The problem is, just about every part of this game’s execution is amateurish and under-baked.
Firstly, the graphics are terrible. At the very least they maintain a good resolution and framerate, but that’s about all I can say about them that’s positive. They are so horribly basic and low-poly, it looks like something quickly whipped together by someone who just learned their first 3D modeling program. And the sound is similarly amateurish, with sound effects that sound nothing like what they’re going for.
The gameplay is also sorely lacking, with controls that work well enough, but have absolutely no feeling that they’re grounded in any sort of reality. There’s no momentum or inertia, and even the control scheme is odd, using the stick to instantly shift up and down, and having “accelerate” and “decelerate” buttons as if this were an aircraft that actually had a distinct front or back.
What’s more, for all of how good some of the tracks are, some are a horrible mess, with those circular gates strewn all over the place with no rhyme or reason. And on top of that, this game features some of the worst rubber-banding I have ever seen in a racing game, with the other racers noticeably speeding up after you pass them, and then slowing to a crawl after they get a short distance ahead of you. Oh, and just to cap off the list of complaints, this is a racing game with no multiplayer.
With some extra work… a lot of extra work… Drone Fight could have been a nice, unique little racing game. As-is, it’s loaded with far too many problems to recommend. In short, this is an amateurish game that needed a lot more work before it was released. Skip it.
tl;dr – Drone Fight is a Racing Flight Sim that has players piloting drones in a race through a series of rings. While there was potential here, just about every part of this game suffers from amateurish flaws that leave it not worth bothering with.
