Review:
Duck Souls is a challenging Platformer first released on PC in 2018 and ported to multiple other platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, in 2020.
This game’s presentation is fairly simple, with a 2D pixel art graphic style and a decent but not especially noteworthy chiptune soundtrack. It’s nothing to write home about, but it serves the purposes of the game well enough.
As for the game itself, this is a pretty standard challenging Platformer. The controls are decent but simple (walk left or right, jump, and dash or air-dash any direction), and the level design is punishing, but the game respawns players quickly to cut down on frustration. There’s nothing this game does especially poorly, nor anything it does exceptionally well.
And that’s… pretty much all I have to say about this one. Duck Souls does exactly what it sets out to do, which is to be a simple, difficult Platformer, nothing more and nothing less. For its $5 asking price, fans of the genre may find it worth a look, but otherwise I’d argue there are better games like this to invest your time and money in.
tl;dr – Duck Souls is a challenging Platformer that doesn’t do anything particularly original or noteworthy, but what it does do, it does well enough. Its low asking price of $5 makes it something that genre fans may want to try, but everyone else should probably move along to something else.
