Review:
Duke of Defense is a tower defense game that’s… actually pretty bog-standard as far as the genre goes. Place towers along a path, upgrade them as you gain resources, try to manage your money… fans of the genre will find most of this old hat.
As it happens, this particular Tower Defense game feels a lot like the PixelJunk Monsters series, with players controlling a character who physically walks around to place the towers, collects money dropped by enemies, and even slowly upgrades the towers just by standing at them.
Having said that, this game doesn’t have Pixeljunk’s charm. The pixel art graphics don’t really have much personality, the soundtrack is forgettable, and while this game does allow you to swipe at enemies directly, the combat is really simple and button-mashy, and movement is frustratingly slow.
If you’re looking for a Tower Defense game on the Switch, Duke of Defense does the job fine, but it does little to distinguish itself. Given that this game is the same price as the far superior PixelJunk Monsters 2, one wonders why you’d bother with this game.
tl;dr – Duke of Defense is a Tower Defense game that’s fairly standard, and plays somewhat similarly to the Pixeljunk Monsters series. And given that Pixeljunk Monsters 2 is the same price as this, and is a much better game… if you’re looking for a Tower Defense game on Switch, there’s not any good reason i can think of to get this game instead of that one.
