Review:

Electronic Super Joy is a challenging Platformer released on PC in 2013, ported to Wii U in 2015, then to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2016, then to Nintendo Switch in 2019. This game has players running and jumping their way through a world that’s dancing like one massive rave, trying to avoid obstacles and get to each level’s warp at the end.

The presentation here is good, but odd. This game combines very simple 2D pixel art visuals with a limited color palette and minimal detail, backed by catchy but unmemorable techno-style music. This in itself would be pretty good, but the game adds to this a very awkward, orgasmic “ohhhh yeahhhh” whenever you pass or respawn at a checkpoint, which will be often since you will die a lot in this game. The game cycles through multiple “ohhhh yeahhhh”s from multiple voice actors, male and female, so soon enough anyone listening to you play this game may well get the impression that you’re watching or playing something… well, inappropriate in a family-friendly setting.

The gameplay here is mostly standard Platformer fare, with a jump, a butt stomp move to take out enemies, and environments with different elements you can react to. The most noteworthy trait about this game is that it is absolutely punishingly difficult, with levels you need to speed through without making a single mistake, lest you be tossed back to the last checkpoint, which… yeah, I already mentioned that.

For those seeking a challenge, and who aren’t playing this game in earshot of another person, you may find something to like in Electronic Super Joy. However, the combination of absurdly challenging gameplay, lack of any major gameplay innovation, and the awkward orgasmic sound clips will make this a game that most players will want to skip.

tl;dr – Electronic Super Joy is a challenging Platformer set in a world that’s like one massive rave. The gameplay here is punishingly difficult, and every time you pass a checkpoint or respawn, you’ll be treated to one of various sound clips of someone saying “ohhhhh yeahhhh” in a sexually evocative manner. Needless to say, the appeal of this sort of experience is going to be extremely niche, and most players will likely want to skip it.

Grade: C+
