Review:

Embers of Mirrim is a platformer where players play as one of two dragon-cat creatures caught in a nebulous disaster that results in them magically becoming combined into one creature.

You’ll notice pretty quickly that Embers of Mirrim is a very pretty game, with nice, detailed environments, excellent lighting, and good music. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s one of the best looking game on the Switch, but it certainly looks much nicer than it has any need to.

The gameplay mixes pretty standard platforming fare with a unique mechanic where you can split the amalgamated creature into two “embers”, essentially glowy spheres, that can be guided through the air temporarily for a few seconds before being forced to combine together again. Since both spheres are controlled separately and simultaneously, this means you’ll have to be coordinating the movement of both in a short span of time, which makes for a fun but difficult challenge.

So this game gets a bunch right, but also stumbles in places too. For starters, the platforming is a bit on the loose side, which led to multiple frustrating deaths while i was playing. In addition, the game can get very repetitious in places.

In one section, your character is caught by surprise by a series of massive hollowed-out trees falling at you from a waterfall overhead, forcing you to navigate through them as they fall. I found this to be incredibly cool and creative… at first. By the time I had to dodge through my umpteenth hollowed-out tree, I was exhausted with the whole thing and my initial impressed reaction had become replaced with frustration at the tedium I was being subjected to.

Still, even with its problems, Embers of Mirrim still has some solid gameplay, and it looks and sounds fantastic. If you’re looking for a decent platformer on the Switch, you could do far worse.

tl;dr – Embers of Mirrim is an absolutely beautiful game with a fun mechanic that has you separating your cat-dragon creature into two glowy ethereal “embers” to get past obstacles. It’s an interesting mechanic, though the game does at times get a bit tedious and repetitive.
