Review:
Fast RMX is a high-speed futuristic racing game along the same lines as F-Zero and Wipeout. It’s actually an expanded re-release of the Wii U game Fast Racing Neo, adding additional courses and vehicles, and man this game is sorely needed on the Switch, since so few games of this sort are currently available on the platform. In fact, the F-Zero games have been absent from Nintendo consoles since the GameCube, which is a shame.
However, surprisingly enough, Fast RMX does an admirable job picking up Nintendo’s slack in this regard, delivering a blazing fast racer with silky smooth framerates, beautiful environments, and exactly the same sort of edge-of-your-seat gameplay that F-Zero fans have been aching for.
Let me be absolutely clear on this – this game is absolutely beautiful. It is a feast for the eyes, and it is shocking that a game this visually spectacular came from a smaller, lesser-known company like Shin’en Multimedia. This sort of quality actually surpasses some of the efforts by AAA developers on the Switch. It’s that impressive.
The game isn’t just an imitator, either – it brings its own mechanics to the table, such as its color-changing boost system, where you need to align your ship’s color with the color of the boost, and the ability to send other drivers spinning by boosting into them.
At launch, a lot of reviewers seem to have taken issue with the game being feature poor, but in the time since, the game has gotten updates that added in those features and more, as well as additional tracks and racers, and now it’s looking a lot better in that regard.
The only other issue this game really has is crashing – unlike F-Zero, the racers in this game don’t take damage from every little jolt, since there’s no damage system in the game, but they will explode outright if you clip an edge or land even slightly where the game doesn’t want racers to be, and that can set you back quite a lot.
Still, even if it’s not perfect, Fast RMX is a phenomenal racing game, and a fine substitute for the likes of F-Zero. Fans of racing games on the Switch absolutely need to own this game.
tl;dr – Fast RMX is a futuristic racing game that isn’t quite on par with F-Zero, but it comes damn close. It looks absolutely fantastic at blazing speeds, plays well, and although it has a few minor issues, it’s still a spectacular game that every racing game fan with a Switch should own.
