Review:

Filament is a family-friendly character-based Puzzle game where players take the role of a suited-up pilot of a space vessel who finds a derelict ship and must gradually power up the ship’s systems by solving a series of puzzles involving moving an avatar through a room where its trailing cable must wrap around pillars before reaching an exit. This game was first released on PC in 2020 and ported to Nintendo Switch later that same year.

Visually, this game looks decent but unspectacular, with both the ship and the puzzles depicted with simple 3D visuals, and the puzzles being largely monochrome (albeit with a few color highlights in certain situations). There are some nice details like parts of the rooms in puzzles undulating to indicate the simulated nature of these rooms, and overall everything has an appealing look to it, but there’s nothing jaw-dropping going on here. These visuals are accompanied by nice but largely forgettable music, and interspersed with the voice-over of one-way conversations with an apparent survivor on the vessel, which is reasonably well-acted but again, nothing extraordinary.

As for the puzzle gameplay… this is pretty good. The puzzle design is excellent and original, making good use of its simple concept to deliver puzzles that are a decent challenge without being overly complex just for the sake of being difficult. And while there’s nothing here that truly excites me, there’s nothing really to complain about here either. Filament is, quite simply, a solid and well-designed Puzzle game.

And that’s… pretty much all I have to say about it, really. If you’re a fan of character-based Puzzle games and looking for a solid one to add to your collection, you’d do well to give Filament a try. It’s nothing truly extraordinary in any respect, but it’s all-around well-designed, fairly original, and overall fun to play. Definitely worth a look.

tl;dr – Filament is a family-friendly Puzzle game that has you returning power to a derelict spacecraft by solving puzzles involving wrapping a powered cord around a series of pillars. While there’s nothing truly extraordinary about it, this is an all-around solid Puzzle game with some well-crafted puzzles and a unique premise. Fans of the genre would do well to give it a try.
