Review:
Fishing Universe Simulator is a fi-you know what, I think I can dispense with the normal introduction here. It’s a fishing game, you know it’s a fishing game, it’s right there in the title. And since I’m being honest here, I’ll say that I’m not an authority on fishing or fishing games, so forgive me if I don’t have a firm grasp on terminology or anything. My favorite fishing game is the fishing minigame in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, if that gives you any idea.
So, having said that, I’m approaching this game as a layman, with the simple question: is it fun to play, is it worth my time?
Right off the bat I’ll say that this game does a few things right. It’s not exactly stunning visually, but the graphics do look okay, especially for a budget indie game. There’s a good choice of locations, and a good variety of fish, rods, bait, and other fishing accessories on display here. And the controls are pretty decent too, with options for using standard controls or touchscreen.
However, I have issues with the game, too. First, the tutorial is clunky, and I feel like it was more confusing than helpful. In addition, there are tons of options for rods, bait, and so on, but I’m not entirely clear on how they all differ from one another. If I want to use the in-game money I earned to buy better equipment, I have a wealth of options but no good way of knowing what will help me the most.
However, the biggest problem I had with this game was that it was just so repetitive. Cast, pull up on the left stick when you get a bite (but not too hard or apparently it will break the line, a mechanic I don’t quite understand), and then spin the right stick to reel it in. Wash, rinse, repeat.
If you absolutely love fishing and want a budget game that will give you a lot of variety of fish and fishing components, Fishing Universe Simulator will probably seem like exactly what you need. But if you want gameplay that has some variety to it, you’ll be disappointed – for all this game’s variety of fish and fishing gear, I still had more fun catching fish in Zelda.
tl;dr – Fishing Universe Simulator offers a wide variety of fish and fishing equipment, controls well, and looks good for a low-budget indie game. It’s just a shame it’s so repetitive.
