Review:

Flat Heroes is a simple Arcade-style Platformer where you play as a square in a single-screen room where various enemies (generally geometric shapes) are trying to destroy you. You can jump, wall jump, wall-cling, air dash, and use a local detonation attack to clear some (but not all) types of enemies away from you, and with only these tools, you need to survive as the enemy types get more varied.

The presentation here is pretty simple – flat-colored geometric shapes on a flat-colored background. Pretty plain looking, which keeps the focus largely on the action. The high-energy music, likewise, isn’t especially memorable, but it suits the intensity of the game and isn’t annoying. There are a few elements of the presentation I found annoying though – the game sometimes uses glowing red-colored walls to denote that a wall or floor is lethal, which is fine, except some touchable walls are similarly-colored, which can be confusing. Likewise, it would have been nice if players were given an indication which enemies can be detonated by your attack and which can’t, instead of just leaving it to the player to figure it out through trial and error.

While the presentation may be a bit too generic, the gameplay here is solid, really challenging the player a little bit more with each additional level and forcing them to use all of the moves and knowledge they have gained from earlier encounters. There’s nothing revolutionary here, just challenging platforming done well.

The game isn’t hurting for content, either. In addition to the game’s 300 built-in levels, there’s also an endless challenge mode, some multiplayer options to play with friends to see who survives longest, as well as leaderboards to test your skills against the world.

In the end, Flat Heroes doesn’t do much to shake up the genre, and the presentation is a bit too simple, in ways that affect the gameplay a bit, but overall this is a fantastic challenging Platformer that fans of the genre would do well to give a try.

tl;dr – Flat Heroes is a challenging Platformer with a simple presentation that has you playing as a square dodging the attacks of various geometric shape enemies. While the presentation could have made a few elements of the game clearer, and the game doesn’t do anything particularly new or revolutionary, overall this is a solid entry in the genre well worth a look.
