Review:

From Shadows is an Action-Platformer released in 2017 on PC and ported to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in 2021. This game has you playing as a werewolf or vampire fighting off demons.

The presentation here is pretty terrible, with ugly hand-drawn poorly-animated visuals, and a soundtrack that’s a mix of orchestral and electric guitar that seems to be trying to copy the aesthetic of Castlevania but doesn’t come off as very memorable. It also bears mention that this game is oddly quiet – aside from the music, the only other sounds seem to primarily be attack sounds – characters make no noise when moving around or jumping, and there aren’t any sort of vocalizations for characters at all. If it weren’t for the forgettable soundtrack, this game would have no personality at all.

Sadly, the gameplay here doesn’t fare better. Both platforming and combat are terrible here, with spotty, laggy controls and shoddy hit detection. There’s little variety to it either, just go from enemy to enemy and button-mash. Even the menus in this game are terrible, oddly unresponsive and often glitchy in appearance.

From Shadows is just a huge mess – it lacks polish, playtesting, and any real hook to get players interested. It’s not fun as an Action game or a Platformer. Even for its low $5 asking price, this game is not worth it.

tl;dr – From Shadows is an Action-Platformer that has you fighting enemies as a werewolf or a vampire, but either way it looks ugly, plays poorly, lacks any sort of unique personality, and doesn’t have any sort of hook to make it interesting. Don’t waste your money on this.
