Review:
112th Seed is a family-friendly Platform-Puzzle game where players play as an anthropomorphized seed moving around in a post-apocalyptic research facility. This game was released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2020.
The presentation here is fairly simple. This game uses 2D pixel art visuals that are pretty monotonous, but do at least have some good animation and little details here and there. Meanwhile, the music here is a very dull and subdued chiptune soundtrack. Overall, it’s not bad, but the somber tone being set here seems to run counter to the cartoony character designs.
The gameplay here is, as with the presentation, fairly simple. However, while this game starts with simple moving box puzzles, it gradually reveals some interesting mechanics the lead to some clever puzzle designs. Because of the small size of the protagonist, the “boxes” here include droplets of water, which can be clambered on or soaked into dirt to assist in growing plants, which can act as bridges or lift up other objects. In addition, players will encounter flowers that allow them to temporarily fly around freely. Despite these mechanics being relatively simple, they’re still used in creative ways that keep things entertaining.
It bears mention that 112th Seed is a fairly short game – it won’t take you more than an hour or two to beat it. However, it’s also a relatively inexpensive game, at about $5. On balance, I’d say this is a pretty good deal, and players looking for a simple but solid little Puzzle-Platform game should definitely give 112th Seed a look.
tl;dr – 112th Seed is a Puzzle-Platform game where players control an anthropomorphic seed in a post-apocalyptic research facility. While this game is relatively short and doesn’t reinvent the genre, the puzzles here are well-crafted and the game’s $5 price tag makes this game a worthwhile choice for fans of the genre.
