Review:
12 is Better Than 6 is a Top-Down Action/2-Stick Shooter set in the Wild West with gameplay reminiscent of the Hotline Miami games, with players swapping out guns as they run out of ammo, and taking on enemies in a flurry of violence where one bullet means death for anyone.
Like the Hotline Miami games, playing through this title often works out as a puzzle of sorts, as you try to figure out the best approach to take out the enemies in your way without getting shot yourself, and at its best it feels very much like this. The game even has a few unique elements of its own, such as the old-fashioned firearms requiring you to re-aim every time you want to fire at a new target, a gameplay mechanic that actually brings an added layer of difficulty and complexity to the game.
However, a few problems persist here, and the majority of them have to do with the game’s graphics. This game uses black and white graphics for its characters, which can often make it difficult to distinguish them from the backgrounds. In addition, the game’s view is zoomed in a bit too much to truly be able to play with the level of strategy this sort of game demands. And finally, because of the top-down view, pretty much all characters are depicted as just cowboy hats until they are gunned down, which results in it being difficult to tell at a glance which way they are facing. For this sort of game, that’s very important.
The result is a game that, while it has all the elements of a great Wild West-themed alternative to Hotline Miami, is much more frustrating to play, as these minor graphical issues add frequent frustrations to what would otherwise be a pretty fun game. Fans of intense action may still find a lot to love in 12 is Better than 6, but most are probably better off sticking with the Hotline Miami Collection.
tl;dr – 12 is Better Than 6 is a Top-Down Action/2-Stich Shooter game where one shot kills, much like the Hotline Miami games. Unfortunately, graphical choices result in a game that’s filled with a lot of frustration that makes this far less fun than the Hotline Miami games.
