Review:
16-Bit Soccer is a Soccer game that released on the PlayStation 4 in late 2020 and was ported to PC and Nintendo Switch a month later in 2021.
This is a very no-frills release in multiple respects, and presentation is definitely one of them. This game uses simple, tiny 2D visuals, a few simple sounds (crowd noises, the thump of kicking the ball, and a ref’s whistle), and that’s about it. There didn’t even seem to be any music used here, which was a bit odd.
As for the gameplay… it technically works, but it doesn’t work well. There’s nothing compelling here at all. Computer-controlled characters move robotically, players aren’t given a great indication where their own team’s players are (which makes it a crapshoot when trying to pass the ball up the field), and there’s nothing fun about moving around or even shooting the ball. There’s nothing outright broken, but I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a soccer game in 2021 to offer more than this.
And that’s pretty much all I have to say about 16-Bit Soccer. It’s not the worst soccer game I’ve ever played, but it does nothing to distinguish itself or to make its core gameplay fun or compelling in any way that makes me want to keep playing it.
tl;dr – 16-Bit Soccer is a dull and uninspired game of Soccer. It technically works, but there’s nothing about it that’s really worth playing.
