Aborigenus is an Action-Platformer with some light Stealth and RPG elements originally released on PC in 2015 before being ported to other platforms, making it to the Nintendo Switch in 2020. In it, players take the role of a tribal warrior on a quest to rescue his bride from those who kidnapped her.

The presentation in Aborigenus isn’t horrible, but it’s definitely nothing special. Decent but unspectacular pixel art visuals, suitable but forgettable tribal music, and muted sound effects are the order of the day here, and they’re all more or less sufficient without being noteworthy in any way.

As for the gameplay, there are some good ideas at work here, but all executed poorly. Firstly, players have typical movement, jumping and attacking, but attacking is frustratingly limited to when you’re on the ground, and movement is made worse by the fact that pressing up jumps (in addition to a jump button also doing this). There’s an RPG-style progression system here, but progression is so slow that it doesn’t really seem worth bothering with. And there’s a Stealth mechanic that has you doing more damage when you’re hidden, but this element is undercooked and often doesn’t work properly.

It would have been nice to see the ideas in Aborigenus develop into something that made better use of them – taking a traditional Action-Platformer and working in stealth and RPG elements could have made for something unique and special. But as-is, this game simply isn’t worth bothering with.

tl;dr – Aborigenus is an Action-Platformer with some light Stealth and RPG elements, but these elements are poorly-implemented, and overall while there’s nothing truly atrocious here, there’s also nothing this game does well enough that makes it worth wasting your time on.
