Review:
Aggelos is a Metroidvania with a distinctly 8-bit look and gameplay that seems to take some of the better elements from games like Zelda II, Castlevania II, and Duck Tales. The result is a game that feels very much like it could have been one of the best NES games if it were released decades ago, but is still a damn good game even coming out today.
There’s not much that this game does that’s especially unique, but pretty much everything this game does, it does well, with good exploration, level design, puzzle design, and boss design.
I don’t really have much to add to this. Aggelos is pretty straightforward – a wonderful Metroidvania that hits all the right notes to give us a solid gameplay experience. It doesn’t really innovate, but rather just gives us a quality experience overall. Definitely worth getting.
tl;dr – Aggelos is a Metroidvania game that doesn’t really innovate, but nevertheless delivers an absolutely superb experience with gameplay elements reminiscent of Zelda II, Castlevania II and other classic NES games, but with today’s great gameplay and game design. Well worth owning for fans of the genre.
