Review:
Airfield Mania is an Arcade-style game released on mobile devices in 2015 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2019. In this game, players use the Nintendo Switch touchscreen (this game cannot be played in docked mode) to direct air traffic to appropriate runways, while aiming to avoid causing any mid-air collisions.
The presentation in this game is good but nothing extraordinary, featuring colorful cartoony visuals, and a simple but decent guitar and piano theme that plays in the background.
As for the gameplay, this is a decent but fairly standard game in this style. Players guide three kinds of planes to like-colored landing strips, as well as directing helicopters to helipads. At any time you can change the route to adjust for new planes entering the scene. This is all pretty standard stuff.
While Airfield Mania is a decent version of this style of game, the lack of any added nuance or depth, the inclusion of only three maps, the lack of support for some way to play the game in docked mode, and the price tag of $6 all add up to a game that seems a tad overpriced for what’s included here. Still, if players are looking for a simple but fun Arcade-style experience with touchscreen-specific gameplay, this will likely make for a decent time-waster.
tl;dr – Airfield Mania is an Arcade-style game where players use the touchscreen to direct color-coded planes to the appropriate landing strip. There’s nothing especially novel or unique about this take on the classic formula, and the $6 price tag seems steep for a game that’s low on content and lacks the ability to play in docked mode. However, if you’re looking for a fun and simple Arcade-style game to play via the touchscreen while you’re on the go, this is a decent choice.
