Anna’s Quest is a family-friendly Graphic Adventure released on PC in 2015 and ported to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2021. In it, players take the role of the titular young girl after she is kidnapped by a witch and forced to undergo experiments that give her telekenetic powers.
The presentation here is decent but nothing special, with hand-drawn 2D visuals in a simple style and not very good animation. The game also has a somewhat subdued fairytale-esque soundtrack and voice acting that’s sufficient but a bit amateurish (and in the case of Anna herself, flat).
The controls in this game can be a little awkward, but the game makes up for this somewhat by having pretty good support for the Nintendo Switch touchscreen for players who are playing the game in portable mode.
As for the gameplay itself, this is… pretty standard Graphic Adventure territory. Explore the environment, interact with things, collect items to use on the environment or combine with other items, you know the drill. This game does have the unique option to have Anna not just look at, interact with, or use items on things, but also to use her psychic abilities as well. This really just means one more thing to try, but it’s something, in any case.
At the very least, this game is pretty good about giving players an indication what they should be doing next, and while the notion of being kidnapped by an evil witch and experimented on is potentially pretty scary, the game does a good job of keeping everything fairly tame for younger kids.
Overall, Anna’s Quest is a Graphic Adventure that doesn’t really do anything significant to shake up the genre, but it’s a relatively decent entry in the genre for younger players who are maybe getting their first taste of this sort of game. But older players aren’t likely to find much here to keep them interested.
tl;dr – Anna’s Quest is a family-friendly Graphic Adventure about a young girl kidnapped by a witch and forced to undergo experiments that give her telekenetic powers. It’s a decent entry in the genre for younger kids, but older players may find the game doesn’t do much to hold their interest.
Grade: C+
