Review:
Apocalipsis is a Graphic Adventure where players take the role of a young man whose beloved has died, and goes onto a quest with creepy and occult themes to get her back.
This game’s presentation features detailed black drawings on a muddy brown background that’s supposed to resemble a woodcut artwork, but tends to look like all the game’s art was drawn on a brown grocery bag. It doesn’t help that the animation here is pretty poor, and at least personally I didn’t find this game’s art style very appealing. It definitely doesn’t justify the 3.7GB of memory this game takes up.
As for the gameplay itself, this is a fairly minimalist Graphic Adventure game with no dialogue, which can be a problem as selectable elements in the environment have the character simply shaking their head or not reacting at all when you select them without indicating why he won’t do anything with them.
That’s if you even know what you’re supposed to be doing in the first place – this game does a poor job of indicating to the player just what they’re supposed to be doing. On top of that, character movement in this game is frustratingly slow, which means while you’re searching around trying to figure out what to do, you’ll be doing a lot of waiting for your character to move where you indicate.
Apocalipsis is a dour, depressing game, and while much of that is the game’s theme, a lot of it can be attributed to frustrating gameplay and bland visuals. I can’t imagine that even fans of the genre will find much to like in this game.
tl;dr – Apocalipsis is a minimalist Graphic Adventure with an aesthetic designed to look like a woodcut drawing, where the protagonist goes on a quest to bring his beloved back from the dead. Unfortunately, the muddy visuals look bland and uninteresting, the game doesn’t do a good job of conveying what the player is supposed to do or why they can’t take an action, and character movement makes the process of figuring this out agonizing. I do not recommend this game, even to fans of the genre.
