Review:

Apple Knight is an Action-Platformer released on mobile devices in 2019 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2021. This game has players jumping on platforms and sword-slashing enemies in a medieval fantasy world.

If that last sentence sounded painfully generic, that’s because this game very much is generic – there are no truly memorable characters, the plot is disposable, the game’s pixel art visuals are nice but nothing special (and your protagonist looks like he/she was copy-pasted from Terraria). What’s worse, not only is the game’s sound and music generic (I’m guessing public domain), but the music is horribly repetitive, to the point where you will want to press the mute button within minutes of playing the game.

Yet despite the generic presentation, Apple Knight is a decent Action-Platformer. Not an outstanding one, mind you, and there’s not an original bone in its body. But the level design and enemy design here is good, with plenty of hidden secrets. And there’s even a character progression system for players to spend in-game gold on to make their character more formidable. It’s just a shame that this progression is so terribly slow, with currency earned at a snail’s pace (I’m guessing the original game papered over this with microtransactions.

Is Apple Knight an especially great or memorable Action-Platformer? Certainly not. Is it worth the $8 asking price? Ehhh, that seems a bit steep to me. But if you can manage to get it on sale for cheap, it’s a serviceable entry in the genre… so long as you keep it on mute.

tl;dr – Apple Knight is a pretty generic Action-Platformer, but it has good level design and plays well enough. It’s a shame the character progression is so slow and the music is so terrible you’ll want to hit the mute button, but if you can get this game on sale, it’s a decent time-waster.

Grade: C
