Review:
Assassin’s Creed Anniversary Edition Mega Bundle, released in 2022 on Nintendo Switch, is a bundle containing every Assassin’s Creed game released on Nintendo Switch so far (in the US, at least – Japan also got a streaming-only version of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey). This bundle includes Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection, Assassin’s Creed III Remastered, and Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection… with each of those releases including multiple games themselves, as well as bonus content. For those wanting the full list, this package contains:
Assassin’s Creed II
Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
Assassin’s Creed III
Assassin’s Creed Liberation
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry (originally released as an expansion, and later made a standalone, so I’m counting it)
Assassin’s Creed Rogue
For those keeping track, this is every game in the mainline series up through Rogue, with the exception of the very first Assassin’s Creed game and its PlayStation Portable follow-up, Assassin’s Creed Bloodlines.
I have previously reviewed all of these games in the prior bundles. Here is what I thought of each of the bundles in this collection:
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection | Compilation / Stealth / Open-World Action-RPG | 1 | B+ |
tl;drAssassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection is a Compilation of remastered versions of Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, three solid Open World Action-RPGs that look and play great on Nintendo Switch. They’re missing the multiplayer content from the original games, they’ll take up a massive amount of space on your MicroSD card, and none of the games is quite as satisfying as what we already got in Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection, but this is still an excellent Compilation well worth getting for any fan of the franchise wanting to play these games on the go. | |||
| Assassin’s Creed III Remastered | Compilation / Stealth / Open-World Action-RPG | 1 | C+ |
tl;drAssassin’s Creed III Remastered is a Compilation of Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed Liberation that’s more of a high-resolution port of the originals than a remaster. These games have a lot to offer, but they also come with a lot of frustrations as well, with everything from poor pacing, frustrating game design, control issues, game crashes, and graphical issues, to name a few. However, for those who are patient enough to deal with all that, there are definitely some incredible moments here, such as Assassin’s Creed III’s excellent world-building and sailing. | |||
| Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection | Compilation / Stealth / Open-World Action-RPG | 1 | A- |
tl;drAssassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection is a compilation of improved ports of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed Rogue, although not quite as improved as the versions of these games other platforms got. Still, these games are both solid ports that largely lack the flaws the Nintendo Switch port of Assassin’s Creed III had, and they’re better games too, with Assassin’s Creed IV in particular being an absolute joy of a swashbuckling tale that remains not only one of the highlights of the entire franchise, but also a great entry point for newcomers to the series. This is an absolute must-own collection of games, and the Nintendo Switch version is an excellent version of the game. | |||
In short, pretty much all of the Assassin’s Creed games are good, and offer a mostly-similar sort of gameplay that combines Stealth, Action-RPGs, and Open-World elements, however, the quality varies somewhat.
It’s pretty well agreed-upon that Assassin’s Creed III is one of the low points in the series, suffering from pacing and control issues, as well as technical issues with the Nintendo Switch port being noteworthy for the lack of improvement over the original release.
However, the series progressed from there, with The Rebel Collection not only being much better ports of the original games, but with the two titular games being among the best in the entire series. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is still to this day seen by many as the pinnacle of the Assassin’s Creed series, and it is (mostly) in fine form on Nintendo Switch.
Later, we would see a release of some of the earliest games in the series on Nintendo Switch in the form of The Ezio Collection. These games don’t have a lot of the great gameplay additions we saw in The Rebel Collection, but these games also lack some of the problematic issues of Assassin’s Creed III. However, being the most recent (as of this writing) Collection to come to Nintendo Switch, I would argue this is the best port of the bunch.
So then the question comes down to value, and at a whopping $100, Assassin’s Creed Anniversary Edition Mega Bundle is certainly an intimidating investment (though it does regularly go on sale for $45, which is somewhat easier to swallow). However, while this may seem pricey, it is actually a pretty good deal for what’s included here – separately Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection, Assassin’s Creed III Remastered, and Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection all cost $40 each, meaning that if you buy this bundle instead, you’re saving $20 off the price of buying them separately, not too shabby.
Should you spend such a big chunk of change on Assassin’s Creed Anniversary Edition Mega Bundle? Well, I would encourage you to wait until there’s a sale, but if you’re in a hurry to get a massive Compilation of great Assassin’s Creed games on your Nintendo Switch, I think you’ll find this bundle worth it – the included games are generally excellent and the ports are mostly very good. Now, if you’re just wanting to jump into the Assassin’s Creed franchise for the first time, I think you’re maybe better off just getting Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection. However, if you’re a series fan that somehow hasn’t gotten these games on Nintendo Switch yet, this is a great way to do that.
tl;dr – Assassin’s Creed Anniversary Edition Mega Bundle is a Compilation of Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection, Assassin’s Creed III Remastered, and Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection, which together between them contain 7-8 Assassin’s Creed games and a hefty amount of extra content. Its $100 price tag is daunting, but for everything included here, it’s actually a pretty good deal… and an even better deal if you get this bundle on sale. This may not be the best way to introduce yourself to the Assassin’s Creed series for the first time, but if you’re already a series fan looking to get everything available on Nintendo Switch so far, this is an excellent package.
