Review:

Barry the Bunny is a Platformer released on PC in 2020 and ported to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2021. This game puts players in the role of the titular bunny, who aims to help build bridges so his furry friends can return to their homes, while fighting off a gang of furry ruffians aiming to destroy all his hard work.

The presentation here is good, with this game providing players with a colorful, inviting 2D pixel art presentation with some decent animation, backed by a synthesized soundtrack that’s a bit overly-simple, but can still be a bit catchy at times.

By outward appearances, Barry the Bunny is a pretty nice, if simple Family-Friendly Platformer… but it’s not. This game has a nasty vicious streak, one that is highly unforgiving and will see you dying over and over again as a simple mistake can be enough to toss you all the way back to the beginning of the level to try all over again.

This, in and of itself, would not be a deal-breaker. After all, there are some very good challenging Platformers that are outwardly cutesy. However, on top of its unforgiving gameplay, Barry the Bunny adds touchy, unreliable controls. Any time I had to do anything around a ladder, I had to be extremely careful or else I would be sent careening down the screen. Any time i had to make a precision jump at the edge of a ledge, I had to cringe and hope that this time the game would actually recognize my jump button input. Yeah, as frequently as I may have fallen prey to this game’s unforgiving design, I far more often fell prey to its nasty control issues.

If you want cutesy Platformers on the Nintendo Switch, you have a wealth of great options. And while Barry the Bunny looks great, a few minutes of its gameplay should make anyone sorry they spent any time with this game instead of one of those other Platformers.

tl;dr – Barry the Bunny is a Platformer about a construction worker bunny that has an inviting, cutesy exterior, and a cold, heartless interior. This game is not only unforgiving in its design, it suffers from nasty control issues that will end up killing you even more often than the challenging level design. Skip this game.
