Review:
Bastion is a Top-Down Action-RPG where “The Kid”, wakes up after some unknown calamity that destroyed the world and must explore what remains of it to try to piece it together.
Probably the most standout part of this game is its narration by voice actor Logan Cunningham, which does an amazing job of conveying the game’s sparse story in an entertaining way while infusing it with a great deal of personality. The rest of the game’s presentation is also pretty good, with nicely animated hand-painted environments and characters. While not impressive on any technical level, the game is still an audiovisual treat.
As for the gameplay, I found it to be a bit repetitive, at times even kinda’ button-mashy. There are definitely RPG elements here, as you acquire and upgrade various melee and projectile weapons through the course of the game, but a lot of the action seems to just be wailing on hordes of enemies and dodging away from their attacks. It’s not bad, per se. I just wish that the gameplay felt as refreshingly original as the presentation.
In the end, Bastion is a game that looks good, sounds great, and plays… okay. It’s a solid title, and well worth a look for Switch owners who haven’t already played it on another platform, but with a presentation this good, I guess I was hoping for more.
tl;dr – Bastion is a Top-Down Action-RPG that has you exploring the remains of a destroyed world, hoping to piece things back together. The game looks really good and has fantastic narration that gives it a great sense of personality, but the gameplay can get a bit repetitive at times.
