Review:
Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a turn-based RPG based on a comic that… I haven’t read, so I can’t tell you how well it does justice to the source material. In terms of the gameplay itself, what we have here is a pretty decent by-the-book RPG.
That’s not to say the game doesn’t do anything interesting or unique. The gameplay in general doesn’t really reinvent the wheel for RPGs, but does tweak it a bit here and there. The game introduces an “overcharge” system that supplements MP, giving a buffer on top of MP for each normal attack a character makes, and they can use overcharge instead of MP for that battle only. It’s a nice way to encourage players to use special abilities more often instead of always conserving MP.
As far as the presentation, this is actually really well-done. The world and characters are gorgeously detailed, and characters are all impeccably well-animated. There is a lot of personality in every movement, above and beyond what’s seen in most other games.
The story is… okay. The problem I had with it is that, being based on an existing property, the game seems to more or less assume you already know who everyone is, and only offers the briefest of introductions to the characters, with backstory quickly relayed to players to try to catch them up, but not in a way that’s especially involving. Honestly, playing this game felt like starting in the middle of a story, and I got a better feel for each of the characters from their look and animations than I did from the story itself.
Still, fans of the franchise will likely find this to be an amazing representation of it in action, and those who aren’t familiar with it can still enjoy a great-looking game with some interesting takes on traditional RPG mechanics. Worth trying, especially if you’re a fan of the comic.
tl;dr – Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a solid RPG with a really great presentation, but those who aren’t fans of the franchise may be left feeling like they’re not getting the full story here. Those who enjoy the comic will likely love it, though.
