Review:
Best Sniper is an Arcade-style First-Person Shooter released on mobile devices in 2019 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2021. This game has players hunting dinosaurs and zombie-like “humanosaurs” in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
The presentation in this game is pretty good, though it’s frustrating that you’re always glued to one spot because it seems like it would be fascinating to roam the game’s post-apocalyptic 3D landscapes and perhaps sneak up on an unwitting dino to get off a shot. The dinosaurs here also look quite good, and while there’s nothing here that’s truly pushing the limits of the Nintendo Switch (this is a mobile game, after all), it is nevertheless a good-looking game.
It’s not a great-sounding game, though. The dinosaur roars sound like stock sounds, and the music sounds like generic vaguely militaristic action game music. Nothing horrible, but nothing all that great, either.
The gameplay here is a bit simple. Set your sights on your prey, zoom in using a scope, perhaps make use of a brief x-ray ability to see weak spots, and fire. If you’re on target, you’ll bring your prey down, but if you miss or only wound your prey, the dino will charge you. This could have been one of the most thrilling parts of the game, but it ends up being perhaps the most disappointing. If you can reload in time, you can get off another shot, but if the dino reaches you, you’ll have to resort to a button-mashing minigame that’s… well, uninspired.
There are other problems here as well. The controls are overly stiff and make it difficult to aim. What’s more, the menus are clearly laid out in a way that makes sense for a mobile device, but not a console, making it unnecessarily difficult to navigate. No touchscreen controls here either, despite that this is a port from mobile devices. Even more frustrating, this game forces players to use Joy-Cons or play the game in portable mode – for some reason the game refuses to recognize the Pro Controller, even though this game also doesn’t make use of gyroscopic motion controls.
One more thing – this game uses wait mechanics that are clearly a leftover vestige of the game’s mobile roots and was surely an element designed to push microtransactions. While there are no microtransactions present in this version of the game, the presence of these elements is still frustrating, all the same.
In the end, Best Sniper Legacy is a game that’s surprisingly good in some areas, and surprisingly disappointing in others. The graphics here are very good, and the premise of hunting dinosaurs holds a lot of promise, but that promise is stifled by limited game design, frustrating controls, and a port to Nintendo Switch that isn’t very well-optimized to the platform’s layout and control options. If you’re a fan of Arcade-style First-Person Shooters, you may find some enjoyment here, but most are better off with other offerings on the platform.
tl;dr – Best Sniper Legacy is an Arcade-style First-person Shooter where players use a sniper rifle to take down dinosaurs. This game’s graphics are surprisingly good, and the premise holds a lot of promise, but the gameplay suffers from too many limitations due to this game’s mobile origins. It’s not terrible, but there are better options on the Nintendo Switch.
