Review:
Big Crown: Showdown is a 3D Platformer/Party Game where players play cartoonish knights of an usurped kingdom magically sent to the future to duke it out in a reality show-style competition involving a race to see who can survive longest on a raised walkway.
As you might expect with that sort of setup, the story is silly, and the presentation is equally so. The game has a nice, cartoony look to it that works well for the silly topic matter, and manages to actually be pretty visually appealing… at a price. The price in question? This game takes up a whopping 6.7 Gigabytes on your SD card. For comparison, the absolutely gorgeous Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is only 6.6GB, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is 6.8GB.
But of course, the important question is how does it play? And the answer is… meh. For starters, for a multiplayer game, it is frustratingly difficult to actually get multiple people into the game, as the game’s menus aren’t really very intuitive. What’s more, despite the game’s support for online multiplayer, the online for this game is dead at this point. Oh yeah, and it can’t be played in single-player – there are no bots or anything like that. Ugh.
But okay, when you get past that, is the game good? Meh. It’s not bad, it’s just so damn simple. You can run around, jump, hit other players a tiny bit, or hold down a button to do a charging attack, and the game basically plays like King of the Hill where the “hill” is constantly moving. It works, I guess, but those I played with found the loose controls ended up killing them more often than they killed each other.
In the end, I just don’t see a point in getting Big Crown: Showdown. The game looks nice, but not nice enough to justify the huge file size, the game is lacking options and the menus are unintuitive, and the gameplay itself is basic at best and at worst it’s not at all fun due to the loose controls. Skip this one.
tl;dr – Big Crown: Showdown is a 3D platformer/Party Game that’s essentially a glorified king of the hill game. unfortunately, it’s dragged down by a lack of options, unintuitive menus, poor controls, overly simplistic gameplay, and a ridiculous file size. Don’t bother.
